This year has brought about a lot of big changes. For the first time, the National Cartoonists Society’s Reuben Awards and NCSFest was online and available to the public (for free)!

This full-day event kicked off at 10AM EDT on Saturday, September 12, 2020 and included an exciting array of panel discussions, award announcements, and creator spotlights — including an event titled “25 Years of MUTTS.”

Patrick joined host and For Better Or For Worse creator Lynn Johnston in discussing Patrick’s journey over the past two and a half decades since MUTTS began. Lynn and Patrick talked about early influences such as their friend, the late Charles Schulz, the fantastic Lynda Barry, and the process of working with Abrams Comic Arts editor Charlie Kochman on Patrick’s newest book The Art of Nothing (which is really something).

Patrick was also the winner of this year’s Elzie Segar Award, in honor and recognition of his unique and outstanding contribution to the profession of cartooning.

Unfortunately I had to spend longer at the educational “jardin cycliste” than I thought, so I missed the encounter. Hope I can watch or listen to it soon. I was cycling to the inauguration event and said “Farley” out loud, and started to cry.

I’ve never thought the family lived in a suburb of Toronto – more a place like Lake Simcoe or Peterborough (not terribly far away, but not a close suburb). Etobicoke is now a borough of the city of Toronto. A subway line and a tram line go there from the city centre.

Wow! This is a can’t miss! I’m setting my calendar right now with TWO reminders.

I agree! This morning I’m going to the inauguration of a park where children learn how to cycle safely; do their hand signals, accord priority (to pedestrians, or when to other cyclists), cycling in groups, commuting to school, etc. Must get back home in time for that encounter.

Mutts team, please share with us when we can see/stream a “re-airing” of the Lynn/Patrick interview … I just missed it today! Boo hoo.

My scribbles will not fly at such an altitude as the cartoonists in NCS – but I know good work. Everyone needs to discover Breaking Cat News and its creator Georgia Dunn. She is earning her spot every single day.

Didn’t catch it in time! But we did tune in to see Patrick at the Princeton Children’s panel in the morning- it was such fun for my kids! Is there a way to view the Awards somewhere?
