FEATURED STORIES
Leo
WHEN WE MET:
September 2012
WHERE WE MET:
Washington Humane Society
CITY:
Washington, DC
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Initially adopted with his siblings, Leo was returned because of his “special condition.” He has CH—cerebellar hypoplasia; part of his brain that controls balance did not fully develop, so he walks as if drunk and is extraordinarily clumsy. A first time cat mom, I was initially intimidated, but he had me at first wall-crash. Together, we padded the corners of tables, found the right litter box to minimize “issues,” and adjusted the bed. At night, he pulls his head into my palm with his paws and purrs the night away. He’s special, alright. I can’t imagine life without him.

Madison
WHEN WE MET:
WHERE WE MET:
Arizona Humane Society
CITY:
Phoenix, AZ
HOW IT HAPPENED:
I came across Madison a grey haired floppy-eared bunny on the AZ Humane website. First sign it was meant to be was that we always thought Madison would be a great name when we have human children. When I went to visit her, there was a sign on her cage that said that she was returned to the shelter on Feb 3rd (my birthday = Second sign!!) for chewing wires and furniture and not getting along with other rabbits. That’s typical bunny behavior! With my rabbit knowledge and understanding I knew she needed me as much as I needed her.

Heidi
WHEN WE MET:
WE MET VIA:
Cen. Oklahoma Humane Society
CITY:
Central Oklahoma
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Heidi and 46 of her “closest friends” were all in one very small house together – the house was filled floor to ceiling with trash, feces and bugs. As a manager at Central Oklahoma Humane Society I went with 6 other team members to this house to assist with capturing of and intake on all of the dogs. Heidi was dog #08 to come out of the building. As I held her waiting for our vet to check her over, I asked my boss to snap a photo of the dog. There was just something special about her! To make a very long story short, I brought Miss Heidi home to foster and knew there was no way I could live my life without her in it. She officially joined my family two months later!

Will, Andy, Toby
WHEN WE MET:
Feb 2000
CITY:
n/a
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Will, Andy and Toby were found in a trash bag, in a parking lot, on a cold and rainy day in March of 2000, all newborn kittens. A friend of mine found them, and called us. We came over right away and fell in love. We brought them home and began the sleepless ordeal of hand-raising kittens! It's a decision we will never regret. They saved us really, coming into our lives during a terribly sad time...when we learned we would never have kids of our own. God gave us Will, Andy, and Toby instead.

Mabel
WHEN WE MET:
Oct 2011
WHERE WE MET:
Angels of Assisi
CITY:
Roanoke, Virginia
HOW IT HAPPENED:
I live in New Jersey, and Mabel's Facebook page somehow came across my feed after looking at hundreds of dogs. I knew this little short-legged, chunky black old pitbull was meant to be with me as soon as I saw her ... Mabel's foster mom brought her to meet me at the shelter, and I will never forget walking away and turning around, only to see her little crooked tail wagging as she watched me leave. I picked her up the next day and we came home. Always full of joy to see me, and rolling on her back and snorting to demand belly rubs! Mabel has also been a wonderful, loving foster sister since!

Jake
WHEN WE MET:
Mar 2013
WHERE WE MET:
Follow Your Dream Border
CITY:
Carlisle, PA
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Scott and I had just adopted a Shepherd/Husky mix puppy from Scott's co-worker and we were looking for a companion for him. We had also just lost our Border Collie mix, Daisy the past November. The first dog we met was a Shepherd/BC mix and did not like Shadow at all. :( So, the owner came back out with Jake. Shadow and Jake hit it off immediately, chasing each other around the enclosure and smelling each other. But the best part was the expression on my husband's face. His face had lit up like a Christmas tree, and I could tell the hole Daisy had left was finally filled. Jake's been an amazing part of our family ever since.

Iris
WHEN WE MET:
Jul 2013
WE MET VIA:
PAWS Chicago
CITY:
Chicago, IL
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Iris was given a second chance at 3 months old when she was brought from Oklahoma to Chicago in a van with several other dogs to P.A.W.S. Chicago. I offered to foster her for 24 hours after she arrived. Knowing that my wedding was only 2 months away, I most definitely couldn’t adopt a puppy. But low and behold, I went to pick her up, took one look at her and knew I wouldn’t be able to give her up. At the event the next day, we made it official and I became a failed foster :)
